Glossary of Terms in the Green Sector

Green Construction
Architects, engineers, contractors and skilled tradespeople who design and use energy efficient methods and green materials for new buildings and renovating existing structures.

Solar Power
Professional design and technology using materials to harness the energy of the sun to charge batteries and to heat water.

Wind Power
Using the wind to turn windmills that are designed to generate electricity in wind turbines.

Hydroelectric Power
A dam is constructed to hold water that is then released to drive a water turbine and generator. New ideas involve harnessing the power of ocean tides.

Geothermal Power
Power is generated from naturally occurring heat stored in the earth, usually created by volcanoes, radioactive decay of materials, hot springs, and solar energy absorbed by earth's surface.

Biogas and Biomethane Power
Technology is used to create energy by capturing and burning gas emanating from waste.

Biomass Power
The process of burning or chemically converting many types of organic materials to methane, cellulostic ethanol and biodiesel.

Hydrogen Energy Generation
Hydrogen is an energy carrier, not an energy source. Hydrogen can be generated at various locations, be stored and transported for later use in fuel cells which can then be converted into electricity.

Energy Storage
Generally considered to be batteries of various types. Issues involve power quality, continuity, energy management, costing and efficiency.

Transportation
In the context of green jobs, transportation involves mass transit, alternative fuel vehicles, and sources of fuel for trucks, planes, ships and buses and trains. A sub-sector involving bicycles and human powered vehicles is of interest for its potential.

Recycling - Waste Management
A vast field of green jobs and careers ranging from recycling truck drivers to developing methods of converting waste to other products as well as creating energy.

Carbon Sector
Carbon is generally considered the harmful by-product of burning fossil fuels responsible for global warming. Capping carbon is a growing source of jobs, first professional as carbon analysts, credit bankers and traders and then field operations.

Climate Change
Climate change is defined as a regional change in weather patterns and temperature. Further it is a link between climate change over the last century and human activity, specifically the burning of fossil fuels. Many opportunities are being created by the private and public sector to address this situation.

Public Sector
Focused on green jobs, sustainability, urban planning, food safety, conservation and pollution prevention, there are many positions being created by all levels of government.

Business Operations: General
The wide scope of green sectors generating new businesses along with green jobs and careers creates opportunities for "C" level executives, architects, engineers and other professionals, I.T. personnel, office personnel, graphic designers, manufacturing plant workers and truck drivers among many others.
